Sia belongs to the subset of her species known as the speakers or singers. their magic lies in their voices; the strong can turn the simplest phrase into a compelling command and have unparalleled persuasive abilities among other sentient creatures. As such, each singer is branded beneath their tongue with a unique rune that allows the Ministry of Gifts to seal their magic at will.

Particularly young for her species and fresh out of her trial stages, Sia has a strong but undisciplined command of her abilities.

The first song, this magic runs old and deep, allowing the singer to experience the past firsthand. For Sia, this is a somewhat disconnected and distorted experience: while she is able to hone on particular stories and draw on the memories of the ancestors, she lacks the discipline yet to focus on any specific person.

Theoretically, this skill could be used on anyone with a close genetic profile to her -- provided her magic was stronger and better focused.

The second song, and oft the most feared in a singer's arsenal, the song of certain will is rarely ever a song so much as a command; twisting and pulling the listener into a state susceptible to suggestion. This can be used for things as simple as getting someone to retrieve an object or perform a menial task (easy), or--when utilized by the grand masters of song--to start and stop wars. It is this song above all others that warrants the need for rune branding: should there be any accusations of unauthorized will use on civilians, the culprit can be easily identify by the mark on the underside of their song. This facet of song had the strongest manifestation in Sia and led to her eventual nomination for the éilliú.
